The optimal irradiation intensity of infrared light per type of complaint

Discover what irradiation strength in infrared light therapy means and which strength is often discussed for different types of complaints.

The optimal irradiation intensity of infrared light per type of complaint - Mvolo

Infrared light therapy is rapidly gaining popularity as a effective method for pain relief and promoting healing.

This therapy uses infrared light to penetrate deep into the skin and:

·       Improve blood circulation

·       Reduce inflammation

·       Promote tissue recovery

A crucial aspect of this therapy is the irradiation intensity, which determines how intensively the light penetrates the skin.

At Mvolo we support innovative research by the LPO (National Pain Organization) to ensure that more and more is known about ways to effectively combat pain.

In this text we discuss what exactly irradiation strength is and which strength is optimal for the treatment of various complaints with infrared light.

What does the irradiance mean?

Irradiance is also known as irradiance. This concerns the amount of energy received by a surface per unit of time. It is usually measured in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²).

In infrared light therapy, the irradiation intensity is of great importance because it determines how much energy is actually absorbed by the physical tissue. A higher irradiance means more energy in a shorter period of time. In other words; this leads to faster, more effective results.

However, you must carefully adjust the irradiation intensity to the specific complaint and the body part to be treated.

Excessive irradiation levels, for example, lead to overheating and possible damage to the skin and underlying tissues. On the other hand, an irradiation intensity that is too low will have insufficient effect and will not lead to the desired relief of the complaints you experience. That is why it is so important to find the right balance.

In infrared light therapy we use different wavelengths of infrared light, ranging from short-wave (IR-A) to long-wave (IR-C). Each type of light penetrates the skin at different depths.

The optimal irradiation intensity per type of complaint

Now it is high time to look at what the optimal irradiation strength is for each type of complaint. This way you can be sure that you the right infrared lamp when you are going to treat your personal complaints:

#1: Lower back pain

Low back pain is a common complaint that responds well to infrared light therapy. For the treatment of low back pain we recommend an irradiation intensity of 30-50 mW/cm².

This strength is sufficient to penetrate deep into the muscles and tissues and improve blood circulation. This is what will reduce your pain. Do this every day for 15 to 20 minutes to relieve your back pain.

#2: Shoulder pain

All kinds of shoulder pain can also be easily treated with infrared light. An irradiance of 25-40 mW/cm² is ideal for this area.

This strength ensures good penetration into the shoulder joints and muscles, effectively reducing pain and stiffness. Using infrared light for 10-15 minutes per session is sufficient to provide pain relief after a few days.

#3: Fibromyalgia

Do you suffer from fibromyalgia? Then we recommend an irradiation intensity of 20-30 mW/cm² for this condition. This is enough to relieve general pain without overloading sensitive skin. With a daily session of 15 to 20 you will reduce symptoms and improve your quality of life.

#4: Arthritis

In arthritis, we consider an irradiation strength of 40-60 mW/cm² to be optimal for treatment. This higher strength is necessary to penetrate deep into the joints and effectively reduce inflammation. Use your infrared lamp about 20 minutes a day to improve your mobility and relieve the pain you experience.

#5: Muscle pain

Do you have muscle pain as a result of a specific effort or a specific injury? Then infrared light with an irradiation strength of 35-50 mW/cm² will be ideal for treating your muscle pain. Shorter sessions of about 10 minutes per day are sufficient to keep muscle pain limited.

#6: Skin problems

Finally, it is very possible to treat skin problems (e.g. acne and eczema) with infrared light. For these superficial complaints, a lower irradiation intensity of 10-20 mW/cm² is sufficient. This strength is effective in reducing inflammation and promoting skin healing. Do infrared light therapy for 10 to 15 minutes every day for optimal results.
