The Importance of Sleep and the Role of Red Light Therapy

Does red light therapy help with better sleep?

Red light therapy is often used as part of an evening routine because red light usually feels softer than bright white or blue light. In studies, photobiomodulation (red and near-infrared light) has been linked to processes related to relaxation and rhythm. In practice, it especially helps when it fits into a simple routine: a fixed time, a quiet setting and little bright light in the last hour before bed.

Sleep is an essential process for our body and mind. Yet many struggle with sleep problems or a lack of quality rest. In this blog we delve deeper into what exactly sleep is, why it is so important, and how red light therapy can help improve sleep quality.

What is sleep?

Sleep is a complex biological process that is essential for the recovery and functioning of our body and brain. During sleep the body cycles four phases, which together form one sleep cycle. A complete sleep cycle lasts an average of 90 minutes and is repeated several times a night. The phases can be divided into two main types: NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) sleep en REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Each phase plays a specific role in the recovery of body and mind (Cochrane Library, 2024).

The stages of sleep

Phase 1: NREM – Transition Phase

  • Features: This is the light sleep where you can easily wake up. The body begins to relax, breathing slows down, and brain activity decreases slightly.
  • Duration: 5-10 minutes per cycle.
  • Importance: This is the transition between waking and sleeping. The body prepares for deeper phases of sleep.

Stage 2: NREM – Light sleep

  • Features: Breathing and heart rate slow down further. The body temperature drops and the muscles relax. Brain activity shows short bursts of activity known as sleep spindles (drag spindles).
  • Duration: About 20 minutes in the first cycle, longer in later cycles.
  • Importance: This phase helps the body relax and transitions to deep sleep. About 50% of total sleep consists of this phase.

Stage 3: NREM – Deep sleep

  • Features: This is the recovery phase where breathing, heart rate and brain activity are at their lowest levels. Blood pressure drops and the body produces growth hormones for cell repair and muscle building.
  • Duration: 20-40 minutes depending on sleep cycle.
  • Importance: Deep sleep is crucial for physical recovery, immune system support and energy recovery. It is also the stage where sleepwalking or talking may occur.

Stage 4: REM sleep

  • Features: In this phase, brain activity increases sharply, comparable to when you are awake. Breathing and heart rate speed up, and the eyes move quickly back and forth (hence the name Rapid Eye Movement). This is also the stage where most dreams occur.
  • Duration: 10 minutes in the first cycle, longer in later cycles (up to 60 minutes).
  • Importance: REM sleep plays an essential role in memory processing, emotional regulation and creativity. It also helps to process experiences of the day and store them in long-term memory.

Why are these phases important?

Going through all sleep phases is crucial for your health. Disruptions in any of these phases can lead to:

  • Fatigue and concentration problems (with insufficient REM sleep).
  • Reduced physical recovery capacity (with too little deep sleep).
  • An increased risk of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease (with a general lack of sleep).

By optimizing sleep cycles, for example using tools such as red light therapy, you can significantly improve the quality of your rest. Red light therapy helps ease the transition to deep sleep and stimulates a natural circadian rhythm, which supports each stage of sleep (Meridian Press, 2024).

Why is sleep important?

Quality sleep supports:

  1. Physical recovery: During deep sleep, the body repairs damaged tissue and builds muscle mass.
  2. Mental clarity: A good night's sleep improves memory, concentration and decision-making (JAMA Neurology, 2024).
  3. Immune system: Sleep strengthens the immune system and protects against diseases.
  4. Emotional balance: Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to mood disorders and increased stress (APA, 2024).

Common sleep problems

Sleep disorders can have a significant impact on quality of life. Common problems include:

  • Insomnia: Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
  • Sleep apnea: Interruptions in breathing during sleep.
  • Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS): Uncontrollable movements of the legs.
  • Circadian rhythm disorders: Disruptions in the natural sleep-wake rhythm (LWW, 2024).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), millions of people worldwide have trouble sleeping, which can worsen stress and other health problems (Tandfonline, 2024).

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy (RLT) is an innovative light therapy technique that uses specific wavelengths of red light (630–850 nm) to support the body in cell repair and relaxation. This light stimulates the mitochondria in the cells, which contributes to improved energy production and recovery (PMC, 2024).

How can red light therapy improve sleep?

Scientific research shows that red light therapy can have a positive impact on sleep quality by:

  1. Regulating melatonin: RLT supports the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, which helps you fall asleep faster (Meridian Press, 2024).
  2. Reducing stress levels: Stress can disrupt sleep, and red light therapy helps by lowering cortisol levels (Tandfonline, 2024).
  3. Improving circadian rhythms: RLT helps regulate the natural sleep-wake rhythm, especially in people with disruptions such as jet lag or shift work (ScienceDirect, 2024).

A study conducted on athletes showed that exposure to red light for 14 days resulted in improved sleep quality and an increase in endurance (Allen Press, 2024).
